Some Fun & Good Information: Make Your Own Self-rising Flour

There is only one week until Christmas. YIKES!!

I should be concentrating on the swirls of peppermint, fudge, eggnog, and assortments of chocolates. They are coming folks, and I have one week to accomplish my quest.

While I was out shopping yesterday I ran across these little peppermint Christmas trees.
Aren't they cute?
And only 99 cents a piece.
Of course they went in the family stockings.
This year I decided to do something different, and I hope my children do not read this post before Christmas.
Have you seen the huge handbags and backpacks that are so popular?
Well, I decided to purchase a handbag/backpack for each family (since there is a female in each family, duh).
I filled each handbag/backpack with items that the whole family can use (kitchen towels, socks, travel mugs, candy, pencils, office supplies, trinket toys for the little ones, cookie mixes, and cute peppermint Christmas trees).
My kids always tell me every year, "Mom, I don't care about the gifts, but we have to have stockings."

Last night I was sitting in the living room and noticed a newly wrapped package sitting under our Christmas tree snowman. This one is from Sean to me.

Take a good look at that. Can you tell me what it is. I am clueless.

Here is another shot at a different angle. Can you tell what it is now?

I am still clueless. And any good chef, cook, or baker would know what that is. I am just drawing a blank.

And the love of my life conned my daughter into wrapping that. She did a good job, huh?

Didn't even use a box to mislead the item.

At the beginning of the week my family members were begging me to make home-made chicken noodle soup. Could I deny them their request? Of course not.

Which leads me back to my biscuit recipe.

I served these biscuits with our home-made chicken noodle soup. What a perfect match.

When it comes to self-rising flour, I make my own. I don't see the purpose of buying a bag of self-rising flour when all the contents are right in your own kitchen.

I use a tightly sealed container, pour my ingredients in, and shake. Ta-Da....self-rising flour.

Here is the recipe I use:

Self-rising Flour

1 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Stir all ingredients together (I put it in a tightly sealed container and shake)

This can easily be increased.

  2. I know i know...but would it be giving it away if I tell you what that is? I can just tell you what I THINK it is...I might be wrong. I kinda looks like a trifle dish. Guessing gifts has always been the best part of the whole process. I'll shake the boxes and sniff them and try to divine what's inside every day until we get to open them. Oh...it could also be a lamp, but somehow I doubt that :D Enjoy it, whatever it is!

  3. Yes Anna, it is a trifle dish. I asked for one, and the goof-ball that got it for me was trying to be funny. I don't think anyone can pick up on my sarcasm in my post. What do you think? I guess I was trying to be funny too....

  4. How wonderful to know you're getting a trifle dish...and you can plan ahead about what you want to make in it first! I am with you ALL the way when it comes to making homemade self-rising flour too. Your kids will love their gift 'bags' - you're so clever! Don't wear yourself out this next week. I think I've already done that, and hope to slow down a bit in the next few days. Enjoy!!
